Former Aztecs lead Fleet to last-second victory

SDCCU STADIUM (03/09/2019) San Diego State alum Kameron Kelly notched three interceptions, one which was returned for a touchdown, but the San Diego Fleet (3-2) still needed a 44-yard field goal from fellow Aztec Donny Hageman to pull off a 27-25 win over the Salt Lake Stallions (1-4) as time expired.

With 57 seconds left to play, the Fleet were hanging on to a 24-17 lead, but Stallions' quarterback Josh Woodrum completed a seven-yard touchdown strike to Nick Truesdell that cut the lead to 24-23.

Required to go for two since there are no extra point kicks in this league, Woodrum avoided multiple defenders until he found Kenny Bell open in the corner of the end zone, giving Salt Lake the 25-24 advantage.

With 47 seconds remaining, Mike Bercovici hit Dontez Ford deep to put San Diego in field goal range, setting Hageman up for the epic game-winner.

Kelly is the first player to record three takeaways in a single AAF game. Safety Jordan Martin found the end zone on defense after taking a fumble return 41 yards to the house.

In his first start since week one, Bercovici put up a team-record 304 passing yards and threw his first career touchdown pass to tight end Ben Johnson, which gave the Fleet a 18-11 lead to close the third quarter.

Off to a 3-0 start at home, the Fleet returns to SDCCU Stadium next week to host the Birmingham Iron.

SDCCU STADIUM (03/17/2019) Last week, the San Diego Fleet (3-3) became the first team in The Alliance to win on a score as time expired. Last night, the Birmingham Iron (4-2) returned the favor with a buzzer-beating 44-yard field goal by Nick Novak, handing the Fleet its first-ever home loss.

Dontez Ford became the first player in Fleet history to cross the 100-yard receiving mark with his three-catch, 183-yard performance. Ford left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

Birmingham quarterback and Chula Vista native Luis Perez threw for a career-high 359 yards, going 27-for-49 with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Next week the Fleet will kickoff a three-game road slate when they visit the Arizona Hotshots.

Following a heartbreaking last-second loss to Birmingham, the San Diego Fleet heads into a three-game road slate fighting for their playoff lives. With just four games left in the regular season, every contest will be critical, beginning with the Arizona Hotshots, who currently shares a second place tie in the Western Conference.

The Hotshots should be full of momentum after knocking off the previously undefeated Orlando Apollos last week. Meanwhile, the Fleet are still looking for their first win away from San Diego.

Tale of the Tape

San Diego Fleet (3-3, T-2nd AAF West)

Head Coach: Mike Martz (56-35)
Week 6 Result: Loss to Birmingham 29-32
Points Scored: 140 (23.3 PPG)
Points Allowed: 121 (20.1 PPG)
CBS Power Ranking: #5

Arizona Hotshots (3-3, T-2nd AAF West)

Head Coach: Rick Neuheisel (90-61)
Week 6 Result: Def. Orlando 22-17

Points Allowed: 123 (20.5 PPG)
CBS Power Ranking: #4

Fleet Offense vs. Arizona Defense

The status of Fleet leading receiver Dontez Ford is still up in the air after an ankle injury put him out in the third quarter of last Sunday's contest. He still managed to pull off his second straight career-high performance with three catches for a team-record 183 yards.

Returning to his collegiate home field, Mike Bercovici will look to targets like Nelson Spruce and Brian Brown to keep the passing game going. In his two starts since replacing an injured Philip Nelson, Bercovici has gone over 300 passing yards. Last week he set the Fleet's new single-game passing record with 311.

While the San Diego run game has fallen on some hard times during the past two outings, Ja'Quan Gardner still ranks third in the league in rushing yards (309). Terrell Watson led all Fleet running backs with 55 all-purpose yards and two total touchdowns against Birmingham.

Arizona's defense made a statement last week limiting a talented Orlando offense to a season-low 17 points. The Apollos’ run game was also held to just four yards per carry.

Erick Dargan leads the Hotshots with 38 total tackles, one shy of the AAF lead.

Fleet Defense vs. Arizona Offense

Since returning to the defensive side of the ball, Kameron Kelly has added a new spark to the Fleet secondary. Anchoring the defensive line, Damontre Moore and Shakir Soto has combined for nine of the team's 18 sacks.

The Hotshots' offense ranks second in the league in total yards, thanks to a three-headed monster made up of quarterback John Wolford, running back Jhurell Pressley, who leads the Alliance in rushing yards (343), and receiver Rashad Ross, who also tops the leader board with six touchdown catches.

🏈 San Diego Strike Force (0-3) vs. Green Bay Blizzard (1-2)
🏠 Pechanga Arena San Diego
📅 Sunday, March 24th 🕔 5:05 PM (PT)

Fresh off a much needed bye week, the San Diego Strike Force will be looking to earn its first win in franchise history when they welcome the Green Bay Blizzard to the historic Sports Arena for another round of indoor football action.

Tale of the Tape

San Diego Strike Force (0-3, T-6th)

Head Coach: Burt Grossman (1st Season)
Previous Game: Loss to Cedar Rapids 48-65
Points Scored: 141 (47.0 PPG)
Points Allowed: 197 (65.7 PPG)

Breakdown: Derrick Bernard is having a stellar season so far, topping the Indoor Football League in passing yards while recording the third most touchdown passes. His leading targets are Marques Rodgers, who is averaging a team-high 75.7 yards per game, and Julian Stafford, who leads the Strike Force in points (36) and touchdown catches (6). On defense, Kenric Young and Timothy Moten are the top tacklers on the team.

Green Bay Blizzard (1-2, T-4th)

Head Coach: Corey Roberson (1st Season)
Previous Game: Loss to Iowa 3-41
Points Scored: 77 (25.7 PPG)
Points Allowed: 144 (48.0 PPG)

Breakdown: After being held to just three points in their last outing, the Green Bay offense would love to unleash it's frustration on a defense that leads the IFL in points allowed per game. Much like Bernard, Blizzard quarterback Lenorris Footman can also get it done on his feet, leading the team in every rushing category. Marquez Gollman, who has two interceptions and a fumble recovery, is a player to watch for on the defensive secondary.

Rough weekend for Football in San Diego

Despite several miscues including back-to-back pick-6's in the first half, the San Diego Strike Force (0-4) had a chance to send the game into overtime in the closing seconds, but Derrick Bernard's pass was deflected in the end zone as time expired, resulting in 53-45 loss to the visiting Green Bay Blizzard (2-2).

The Strike Force will have a another shot at ending their winless streak when they visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls in a rematch from Week 2.

Nelson Spruce set an AAF single-game record with 12 catches, but the San Diego Fleet (3-4) are on the outside of the playoff picture following a 32-15 loss to the Arizona Hotshots (4-3).

They continue their road slate this Saturday against the Salt Lake Stallions, a team they defeated with a last-second field goal three weeks ago.

Prior to becoming a first-team All-American last season as a rookie for the San Diego Rebellion, Elliot Nguyen’s love for the game started in Middle School, where she played flag football with her male friends. When she got to Patrick Henry High School, she stunned her classmates when she not only tried out for tackle football, but played all four years as a running back and linebacker for the Patriots.

“She brings that same level that she had in the high school game to the women’s game,” said Rebellion teammate Knengi Martin. “Which is why she’s been one of our top defensive players.”

We spoke with Nguyen to discuss her football experience as her team get set for next Saturday's season-opening match-up against the San Diego Surge.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (04/30/2019) The San Diego Fleet (3-5) remains winless in road games after dropping an 8-3 contest to the Salt Lake Stallions (3-5).

Ryan Moeller recorded three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble recovery), but the Fleet offense was unable to capitalize off any of them.

Late in the second quarter, Salt Lake's Joel Bouagnon's scored on a four-yard touchdown run after picking up a fumbled snap. The successful conversion gave them an 8-0 advantage going into halftime.

Following a scoreless third quarter, Donny Hageman put San Diego on the board with a 29-yard field goal.

The Fleet had an opportunity to pull off a game-winning drive, but Mike Bercovici's pass was intercepted with 31 seconds left to play.

The Fleet will get one last shot to win away from home next week when they visit the 7-1 Orlando Apollos, who already clinched a playoff berth.

SAN DIEGO FLEET OFFICIAL STATEMENT

SAN DIEGO – APRIL 3, 2019 – The San Diego Fleet organization is shocked and incredibly disappointed to learn of chairman Tom Dundon’s decision to suspend football operations of The Alliance of American Football (AAF), as announced yesterday.

We are grateful to our players, coaches, administrative staff members, corporate partners and especially to our fans for their faith in our product and support of our team.

From the inception of the league, our goal was to return high-caliber professional football back to San Diego. Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian delivered with a quality product that fans consumed on national TV, online and here in San Diego, where their dedication to the new home team was abundantly evident by the electric atmosphere at SDCCU Stadium.

We hope to be able to share information from the AAF about ticket refunds in the future.

Sincerely,

Jeff Garner, Team President

While the Women's National Football Conference kicks off its inaugural season this Saturday, April 6th, the league has been making some game-changing moves since it was announced last August

With major companies like Adidas and Riddell Sports providing corporate sponsorships, as well as incentives for player performance, the WNFC has the potential to launch Women's Football into the mainstream in the near future.

San Diego is the only market with two teams (Surge & Rebellion) competing in this promising league, so our interest is obviously high.

Here is our preview of the founding members who will compete for the first-ever Title IX Cup, awarded to the team who wins the WNFC National Championship game in Denver on Saturday, June 29th.

WNFC PreSeason Power Rankings
The final regular-season rankings will determine playoff pairings.

#1 Utah Falconz

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

2018 Record: 7-1, IWFL/BOTW
Conference: Pacific
Head Coach: Rick Rasmussen (6th Season)

Key Opponent: #2 Texas Elite (4/27)
Impact Returners: RB Keeshya Cox, WR/DB Elisa Salazar, FB/LB Tina Tela

The high-flying Falconz had another stellar season in 2018, but unfortunately it ended with just their second loss in team history. The two-time IWFL champions will begin their quest for redemption at the top of the WNFC's first-ever preseason rankings.

#2 Texas Elite Spartans

Location: Dallas, TX

2018 Record/League6-0, IWFL/BOTW
Conference: Atlantic
Head Coach: Odessa Jenkins (2nd Season)
Key Opponent: #1 Utah (4/27), #4 Atlanta (5/18)
Impact ReturnersDL LaShaunte Bowman, QB Jessica Gerhart, RB Amber Kimbrough,

Rank them wherever you want, the undefeated Spartans are still the team to beat u
ntil proven otherwise. Their current roster list all but four players from last-year's team that topped Utah for the "Best of the West" championship. If the top two remains the same by April 27th, we should be in for a classic rematch.

#3 SAN DIEGO SURGE

Location: Santee, CA

2018 Record/League5-2, IWFL/BOTW
Conference: Pacific
Head Coach: Mike Suggett (7th Season)
Key Opponents: #5 Seattle (5/4, 5/11), #10 SD Rebellion (4/6, 5/25)
Impact ReturnersOL/DL Jessica Cable, OL/DL Eboni Chambers,
WR/LB Deana Guidry, DB Sonfre Roberson, K/WR Melissa Strother, DL Nikki Quest

Billing 2018 as their farewell tour, the Surge later decided that third place in the "Best of the West" Tournament was not the right way to end their phenomenal history. As they enter this new league with a solid core of returning veterans, this team appears primed to compete for its first league title since 2012.

#4 Atlanta Phoenix

Location: Atlanta, GA

2018 Record/League6-2, WFA
Conference: Atlantic
Head Coach: Brian Montgomery (3rd Season)
Key Opponents: #1 Texas Elite (5/18), #6 Alabama (4/6, 5/11)
Impact ReturnersOL Blair Clark, DT Latanglia Dorsey, OL Devyn Johnson,
LB Carla Odom, DE Jenitra Shields, FB Shanice Wheeler

A five-game win streak to close out the 2018 regular season included knocking off the then defending national champion Dallas Elite, but Atlanta's strong run would end in the first round of the WFA Division I playoffs. This year they will renew their rivalry with Alabama, and go for their second straight win over a Texas team coming off a championship season.

#5 Seattle Majestics

Location: Seattle, WA

2018 Record/League5-3, IWFL/BOTW
Conference: Pacific
Head Coach: Scott McCarron (5th Season)
Key Opponents: #3 SD Surge (5/4, 5/11), #8 Los Angeles (4/6, 4/27)
Impact ReturnersLB Holly Custis, DB Jackie McCall, DB/TE McKenzie Tolliver,
DL Kase Tukutau, RB Kiki Williams, WR Adrienne Wilson

The lone franchise in the Pacific Northwest will play all three of their scheduled road games in California (two in San Diego, one in Los Angeles). In addition to returning five All-Americans, the Majestics added some international players to beef their roster.

#6 Alabama Fire

Location: Birmingham, AL

2018 Record/League4-4, WFA
Conference: Atlantic
Head Coach: Cendric Lane (2nd Season)
Key Opponent: #4 Atlanta (4/6, 5/11)
Impact ReturnersWR Catrina Fincher, DE Shardonay Jenkins

Going into their third season of competition, the Fire will be playing with heavy hearts following the untimely death of TeShaura Turnbull last September. Turnbull was a two-way standout for the Fire, leading the team in both rushing and tackles for loss last season. To honor her memory, the league will have a moment of silence before kickoff of every game on opening day, and all WNFC players will wear a “Bull” decal on their helmet.

#7 North Florida Pumas

Location: Jacksonville, FL

2018 Record/League4-3, USWFL
Conference: Atlantic
Head Coach: Kim Phillips (3rd Season)
Key Opponents: #4 Atlanta (4/13, 4/20), #6 Alabama (5/18, 6/1)
Impact Returners: OL Kristina Autrey, WR Ashaniti Broxey, RB Lauren Hedegard,
DL Nina Protonotarious

From a win-less inaugural season in the WFA to a championship run in the USWFL, the WNFC's Florida representative looks to continue trending upwards in 2019.

2018 Record/League: 0-6, IWFL
Conference: Pacific
Head Coach: Timothy Homes (1st Season)
Key Opponents:  #5 Seattle (4/6, 4/27), #10 SD Rebellion (4/13, 5/18)
Impact Returners: OL Kris Brannon, QB Jane "Redd" Brinkman,

With a forgettable 2018 season behind them, the re-branded and reloaded Bobcats are set to challenge for one of four slots in the Pacific Conference Playoffs, which will take place in their home city.

Conference: Atlantic
Head Coach: Loren Stephanson (2nd Season)
Key Opponents: #2 Texas Elite (4/6, 4/20), #4 Atlanta (5/25)

"Always earned, never given" is the adopted slogan for the Heat as they get set for what should be a challenging second season. It begins with a two-game series with an in-state powerhouse.

#12 Las Vegas Silver Stars

Location: Las Vegas, NV

2018 Record/LeagueIndependent
Conference: Pacific
Head Coach: Carrie Walters (2nd Season)
Key Opponents: #1 Utah (4/6), #3 SD Surge (4/27), #5 Seattle (4/13)

After testing the waters as an independent team last year, the Silver Stars will begin their first campaign as league members with match-ups against the top three teams in the Pacific.

#13 Denver Bandits

Location: Denver, CO
Head Coach: Marcel Simpson (1st Season)
Conference: Pacific
Key Opponents: #1 Utah (4/13, 5/4), #3 SD Surge (6/1)
Impact Players: RB/LB Britney Derhak, WR/SS Kristen London, FB/LB April Regas

With a roster that already features a solid group of veterans with football experience in Colorado, the addition of eight-time All-American Kristen London from the Atlanta Phoenix should give this new organization a huge jump start towards being competitive.

#14 New Orleans Hippies

Head Coach: Curtis Green (1st Season)
Conference: Atlantic
Key Opponents: #1 Utah (5/11), #6 Alabama (4/13, 4/20)

Tale of the Tape

Head Coach: Mike Suggett (7th Season)
Previous Game: Defeated Seattle 16-6 (7/21/18)
First Year of Football: 2011 (8th Season, 64-12)
Official WNFC Ranking: #3

Returning Starters: QB Jamie Avii, DL Joniece Benjamin, LB CJ Bridges,
OL Jessica Cable, OL Eboni Chambers, RB Briiana Gorrell, QB Deana Guidry,
RB Adriana Gutierrez, DB Deanna Hunt, OL Rebekah LaMie, DB Sonfre Roberson,
RB Jazzmon Stovall, WR Melissa Strother, LB Mercedes Tyler, DL Nikki Quest,
WR Melanie Quijano

Breakdown: Following the retirement of Melissa Gallegos, the Surge will enter the 2019 season with a new starting quarterback. While Jamee Avii and Rachael Bell appear to be the top contenders for the job, all-purpose threat Deana Guidry could see some reps behind center as well.

After leading the team in catches last year, Jessica Cable will leave her beloved tight end position to anchor the offensive line with consistent standout Eboni Chambers.

Sonfre Roberson returns to the defensive secondary coming off a two-interception performance in her previous outing against Seattle

When Guidry isn't making plays on offense, she'll be laying the hammer along side an experienced front seven.

Rookies CJ Collier (WR) and Mailo Tuavao (LB) had impressive showings during the preseason scrimmage, and should develop into solid contributors.

Head Coach: Knengi Martin (1st Season)
Previous Game: Loss to Mile High 16-23 (7/30/18)
First Year of Football: 2018 (2nd Season, 7-3)

WR Kristin Smereczynski, DE Christin Stoll, P/K Jennifer Strother, OL Katrina Walter

Breakdown: While a new group of coaches will assist from the sideline this season, Knengi Martin is the undisputed leader of this team. In her second season at quarterback, Martin will get back three of her leading targets from 2018.

The acquisition of former Surge receiver Lanika Manning will provide more veteran presence to the passing game.

As a rookie last season, Elliot Nguyen earned first-team All-American honors after leading the WFA's Division II in total tackles (93).

Kristin Smereczynski recorded the first interception in team history, but as the season went along, she also proved to be factor on offense, where she led the team in receptions.

After five years away from football, Crystal Stokes returns to add fire power to an already stout defensive line.

On the ensuing possession, Deana Guidry broke four tackles on her way to a 23-yard run to the end zone, tying the game at 7-7 with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

After Carrell connected with Leland Ellsworth for the first score of the game, the Boldest answered with a field goal to make it 7-3 to end the first quarter.
