San Diego Fleet unveils inaugural roster
SAN ANTONIO, TX (01/30/2019) On the final day of its first-ever, league-wide training camp in San Antonio, Texas, the San Diego Fleet has set its final 52-man roster for the inaugural season of The Alliance of American Football.
“There were some very tough decisions we had to make, which is a direct credit to the caliber of player brought in by The Alliance,” said Fleet General Manager Dave Boller. “We are very pleased with our final roster and and impressed with this talented group of players. We are all excited for the fans in San Diego to finally get the chance to see us play and for all our efforts to come together for the opener in 10 days.”
The roster features seven former San Diego State players:
DE Alex Barrett
OT Daniel Brunskill
TE Gavin Escobar
OG Darrell Greene
WR Kameron Kelly
LB Eric Pinkins
OT Terry Poole
The Fleet will travel back to San Antonio for its opening game on Feb. 9 against the Commanders, who are led by former San Diego Chargers Head Coach Mike Riley (1999-2001). First snap is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT at the Alamodome.

San Diego Rebellion Signing Day
During the morning of Super Bowl Sunday, the San Diego Rebellion held their signing day at Pitcher's Sports Bar. The Rebellion will go into their second season after finishing 7-3 and advancing to the second round of the WFA playoffs.
Now members of the newly formed Women's National Football Conference, they are set to open the season against the San Diego Surge on April 6th.
We would like to thank Knengi Martin, Aubry Twamley, and Crystal Stokes for taking the time out to speak with us.

San Diego Fleet to debut on National TV
Led by head coach Mike Martz, the San Diego Fleet will help kick off the Alliance of American Football inaugural season when they take on the San Antonio Commanders this Saturday, February 9th at the Alamodome.
The game will be televised live on CBS at 5:00 p.m. PT.
Seven of eight former San Diego State players on the Fleet roster were named starters for this match-up, including newly signed kicker Donny Hageman.
Starting quarterback Mike Bercovici (Arizona State) will be targeting Kameron Kelly, and tight end Gavin Escobar, who spent five seasons in the NFL after an outstanding career with the Aztecs.
Kelly entered Fleet Training Camp as a defensive back, but was moved to receiver, where he is now listed as a starter along side Brain Brown (Richmond).
With Bishop Sankey (Washington) on injured reserve, former Division II standouts Ja'Quan Gardner (Humboldt State) and Terrell Watson (Azusa Pacific) will see many opportunities at running back.
The tackle positions will also be anchored by SDSU alums, Terry Poole on the left and Valley Center High alum Daniel Brunskill on the right, while the defensive front seven will feature edge rusher Alex Barrett and linebacker Eric Pinkins.
San Antonio is led by former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike Riley. The last time Martz coached against Riley was back in 2000 when Martz’s St. Louis Rams defeated the Chargers 57-31.

Offensive struggles doom Fleet, drops debut at San Antonio 15-6
SAN ANTONIO, TX (02/07/2019) The Alliance of American Football kicked off its inaugural season with a nationally televised contest between the San Diego Fleet and hosting San Antonio Commanders.
Two field goals (47 & 28 yards) by former San Diego State kicker Donny Hageman were the only points San Diego could get on the board, as the San Antonio defense kept the Fleet (0-1) from reaching the end zone, helping secure the win in front of 27,857 fans at the Alamodome.

First-ever TD sparks first-ever win for Fleet
SDCCU STADIUM (02/17/2019) The San Diego Fleet (1-0) opened its home schedule with a 24-12 come-from-behind victory over the Atlanta Legends (0-2) in front of over 20,000 fans who braved some heavy rain.
Ja'Quan Gardner put up 104 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, but in the fourth quarter, he became the first player in Fleet history to find the end zone after his 8-yard run gave the team a 15-12 lead with 9:04 left to play.
Following a three-and-out by Atlanta, Gardner scored again from seven yards to all but seal the game.
“This is a huge win for us to get back on track,” Gardner said. “Football is back in San Diego and we couldn’t be happier.”
The Legends got the ball first and ended their opening drive with a 29-yard field goal by Younghoe Koo.
On the ensuing possession, quarterback Phillip Nelson, who was making his first career start, was picked off by Carlos Merritt. Atlanta capitalized with a 19-yard bomb from Matt Simms to Malachi Jones to give the Legends an early 9-0 lead.
A 46-yard field goal Donny Hageman put the Fleet on the board with 1:38 left in the first half.
Ryan Moeller's second interception of the season set up another Hageman field goal, the 43-yarder cut Atlanta's lead to 9-6 at the half.
The San Diego State alum made all four of his attempts.

Fleet knocks off San Antonio in revenge game
SDCCU Stadium (02/24/2019) The San Diego Fleet improves to 2-1 and ties for 1st place in the West Division standings after putting away the San Antonio Commanders (1-2) 31-11.
Fleet running back Ja’Quan Gardner had another big game with 122 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. His 83-yard burst to the end zone with 8:03 left in the third quarter is the longest scoring play in The Alliance this season.
Phillip Nelson threw two touchdown passes to Nelson Spruce, while linebacker AJ Tarpley scored off a 27-yard interception return.
San Diego got off to a bad start after Nelson's interception on the first play from scrimmage led to a 47-yard touchdown strike from Commanders' quarterback Logan Woodside to Mekale McKay, who led all receivers with a game-high 91 yards on four catches.
San Antonio's 14-yard touchdown pass would have extended their early lead to 14-0, but it was called back due to a holding penalty.
The Fleet got on the board with a 94-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass from Nelson to Spruce, but it was linebacker A.J. Tarpley's 27-yard pick-six that gave them their first lead of the game with 11:02 left in the first half.
Following a Commanders' three-and-out, Nelson and Spruce connected again for an 18-yard touchdown with 2:09 seconds remaining in the half. A second rushing conversion by Terrell Watson gave the Fleet a 22-8 halftime lead.
The Fleet will be seeking their third straight victory when they visit the Memphis Express (0-3) next Saturday at 5:00 p.m. pacific time.

💻 Bleacher Report Live 📻 XTRA 1360
Riding high following back-to-back wins at home, the San Diego Fleet travels to Tennessee for what could be a "trap game" against a team itching to end its winless streak while the season is still young.
After a 26-0 loss to Birmingham in week one, the Memphis Express dropped their next two games by a combined six points (20-18 vs. AZ, 21-17 vs. ORL). The three teams they loss to are currently tied for first place in their respective divisions, so underestimating this squad is not an option.
Also in a first place tie, the Fleet will need another complete performance if they want to remain in the driver's seat and secure its first-ever road win.

Fleet Offense vs. Express Defense
Following a record-setting performance in last week's win, Ja’Quan Gardner was named the AAF Offensive Player of the Week. The league's leader in rushing yards recorded the longest scoring play in Alliance history with an 83-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, finishing with a season-high 122 yards. Quarterback Philip Nelson is coming off his best game as the Fleet starter so far, connecting on two touchdown passes to Nelson Spruce, the team leader in receiving yards (119).
Looking to help slow down San Diego's momentum in the run game will be a linebacking corp operated by DeMarquis Gates, who is tied for second in the league with 19 total tackles, and Anthony Johnson, who has two of Memphis' five sacks.
Fleet Defense vs. Express Offense
Allowing less than 13 point per game, the Fleet defense continues to improve each week. AJ Tarpley earned the defensive nod for Player of the Week after returning an interception 27 yards to the end zone for the first pick-six in team history. Shakir Soto's 2.5 sacks puts him in a third place tie for the league lead.
Zach Mettenberger was named the new starting quarterback for Memphis after replacing Christian Hackenberg in the second half of last week's loss. He threw for 120 yards and two touchdowns in his effort to rally the team. Zac Stacy only trails Gardner for the AAF lead in rushing yards (188), but he was out performed last week by Sherman Badie, who racked up 59 yards on eight carries against Orlando.
